Keeping up with mathematical skills at home is key to your child’s success in the classroom. The great thing is that it doesn’t have to be difficult or time-consuming! Read along to find a few ways to integrate math into your everyday lives.
Around the Home
You can easily bring math into daily tasks around your home such as in the kitchen, measuring ingredients, doubling or halving recipe ingredients, and dividing meals into equal servings. Math can also be used while gardening or working around the house, using measuring and planning skills.
During Play
Blocks, crayons, toy cars, and crafts can all be used to teach counting skills, comparing, recognizing patterns, and putting things in order. You can also work on teaching your child to tell time!
The Use of Money
If your child earns an allowance, they will be eager to learn how to count their money. Teach them how to exchange smaller coins for larger ones, like 10 pennies for a dime. Counting bills larger than ones will also help them learn how to count in multiples.
Mental Math
Pose mathematical questions that will be simple enough for your child to think about in their head. This can be performed on car rides, walks, or practically anywhere! For example, you can ask your child, “The park is 10 miles from our house. If we’ve already traveled 3 miles, how much farther do we have left?”
We hope that these ideas will inspire you to integrate math into your day to day activities. It will surely benefit your child in the classroom in the years to come!
